We usually travel or host at the end of our school year: the end of June/beginning of July. Our club ranges between 16-20 members. Our chaperone to teen ration is 1 to 4 or 5. Recent Exchanges have included an overnight trip to New York City as well as a day trip to Niagara Falls and Dairen Lake, a Six-Flags caliber amusement park. We also tour our county, which surrounds the end of Cayuga Lake and includes several state parks with many gorges and waterfalls and is home to Cornell University and Ithaca College; sometimes we see a production at one of our many local theatres. If we host a club for 7 full days, we are often able to take in an additional location outside the county; possibilities include Corning Glass, Howe’s Caverns or the Baseball Hall of Fame. We also build family time into our schedule, which can just be down time or used to see or do something that the guest is interested in that was not included in the group itinerary or something the host family thinks is especially interesting. Tompkins County has a population of about 96,000 with Ithaca being the county seat. Most of our members come from the small rural communities, and have a wide variety of interests. We have been participating in the 4-H Exchange Program since 1986. |
